1970 was the pinnacle of the American muscle car movement. Too much performance just wasn't enough, and user friendliness was exchanged for a healthy combination of style, attitude and danger. Just take a look at this handsome Chevelle Super Sport, a car that wraps butch styling around serious big block horsepower and the kind of hardware that's become the stuff of legend. With its ample and inexpensive parts supply, ease of ownership and classic, all-American appeal, THIS is the top dog muscle car that every octane-fueled gearhead wants to park in their garage. And now, thanks to your like-minded friends at RK Motors Charlotte, you can drive one home in better-than-new condition!
BODYWORK/TRIM
Beginning life with a Turbo Fire 307 and trusty Powerglide 2-speed, this sweet LS6 tribute showcases spicy paint and bodywork that's first-rate throughout. Smooth Cranberry Red base is seated under Tuxedo Black Super Sport stripes and buried in glossy clear. And that pigment highlights carefully sculpted steel that's decorated with traditional factory trim. At the front of this retro road rocket you'll find a familiar Super Sport grille, which hangs a small AACA plaque and fresh "CHEVELLE" script between four T3 headlights and a thick chrome bumper. Opposite that bumper, a trick ZL2 hood anchors traditional lanyards and rebuilt Hide-A-Way wipers at the base of like-new glass that's wrapped straight stainless frames and color-keyed vinyl. Opposite that vinyl, clean "SS454" badges combine with dent-free fender trim, traditional chrome door handles and flashy chrome mirrors to add visual detail to the car's hot profile. And at the back of that profile, a second chrome bumper hangs a black Super Sport inlay between fresh brake lamps and polished exhaust tips.
ENGINE
Although the second-generation Super Sport's ferocious Turbo Jet V8 was conservatively rated at 450 horsepower, it actually punched the dyno somewhere north of 500. Pull this classic's pins and you'll find a correct cowl induction system that's cleanly integrated into a completely finished, Satin Black frame. At the center of that frame, a correctly decaled, single-snorkel air cleaner forces oxygen in to a modern Holley 4-barrel, which is threaded onto a familiar Winters intake. At the back of that intake, a traditional points distributor sequences fire through fresh Packard TV R Suppression cables. Below those cables, an old school AC fuel pump fronts restored exhaust manifolds and chrome-capped, cast iron heads. In front of those heads, GM-branded hoses channel water past a fresh alternator with the help of a beefy radiator and familiar tower clamps. And everything, from the car's Delco battery topper to its Delco Moraine brake booster, looks much nicer than anything that left the assembly line.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
Behind the stout engine, a Turbo-Hydramatic 400 3-speed sends power to a proven 12-bolt axle. That tagged and marked drivetrain rides an optional F41 double A-arm front and 4-link rear suspension, which mixes heavy duty sway bars and factory power steering with boxed control arms and stiffer springs. The car's rebuilt power front disc and rear drum brake system is present, accounted for and functions exceptionally well. The aforementioned exhaust manifolds dump spent gases in to high performance, true-dual pipes that breathe through raspy, dual-chamber mufflers. And power meets the pavement through stylish Super Sport Wheels and F70-14 Goodyear Polyglas tires.
INTERIOR
Featuring a host of new components, and decked in clean Black vinyl, this convertible's fully restored interior feels both comfortable and inviting. Its slick front bucket and rear bench seats show hardly any signs of wear. In front of those seats, a straight and crack-free dash hangs deluxe Chevelle telemetry above GM Performance Parts accessory gauges and an upgraded AM/FM stereo. Below that dash, a familiar horseshoe shifter surfs an attractive, stainless-trimmed console. And in front of the driver, a Chevrolet Rally Wheel laps a tilt steering column.
