Spy photographers have captured their first shots of the redesigned 2018 Jeep Wrangler driving about near Fiat Chrysler’s North American headquarters in Auburn Hills, Mich.
The Wrangler Unlimited is wearing heavy camouflage, yet some new design traits are evident.
For example, the next-gen Wrangler’s windscreen appears to have a steeper rake than the current version, which would give the rolling brick better aerodynamics.
The off-roader’s wheelbase also appears longer than the current four-door’s 116 inches. FCA had indicated in an SEC filing that the Wrangler would move from its current five-speed automatic transmission to the eight-speed automatic.
The current Wrangler is too short to accommodate the eight-speed, sources earlier told Automotive News.
Earlier spy photos revealed changes in the Wrangler's suspension geometry, including a redesigned rear axle and rear differential, and excluding a rear track bar.
U.S. sales of the current Wrangler rose 1 percent to 19,003 deliveries in April. They are essentially unchanged for the year to date at 60,744 deliveries.
